Scenic Arts

Marilyn Muller is available for nonunion and overhire positions in film, theatre, scene shops and display houses in NY, NJ, and CT, until May 2009. Call: 561-632-4267.  Below are examples of the numerous scenic painting tasks from the past year.

Faux gold walls, Healthination.com ,  for an internet
video, NYC. - two days.

"You are a charm and great to work with. Thank you
so very much for going far beyond the call of duty on this
for me. The walls look great!! Everything worked
like a charm. There is very little difference between ours
and theirs. But I like yours much better. All the walls went
together like planned and the seams patched perfectly.
A true success!! Thank you again for the part you played in
making this work. "- Eli Metcalf, art director, who was
also a joy to work for.

This Healthination.com  job consisted of:  contruction,
procuring materials, and the application of a
"venetian plaster" (using joint compound),  primer,
faux gold walls to duplicate in every way the
existing walls of the set - without actual color samples
- perfect! House paints on MDF and luan.  Time
pressures and poor light at the end.

Detail  brush work- cockles cart, Goodspeed Opera,
East Haddam,CT.  Three weeks as part of the Paints
crew for  "Half a Sixpence", under Diane Fargo and
her assistant, Carla.   Very elaborate set.
It was a great learning experience, one which I
will always remember.

Goodspeed Opera, "Half a Sixpence" emporium
drop with translucent windows.  My humble
contribution was:  assisted in lining, cartooning,  pounce
of banjo designs, masking with toughback,  precision
cutting,  painting with and without bamboo extensions.

Spray painting exercise, under Janet Stapleman's
instruction, pneumatic sprayer, masking, Studio and
Forum Workshop held at Scenic Arts Studios.
A wonderful workshop!

Paints crew under Jake Wood, scenic charge:
roller, brush with extensions, schlepitchka on back wall,
Shakespeare New Jersey, "Complete Works of
Shakespeare", outdoor amphitheatre in hot weather,
but it was fantastic to learn under Jake.

Another view of cartooning and  lining with markers
and extensions for Goodspeed Opera-"Half a Sixpence".

An independent drapery project 6' x 6'
imitating technique of Scenic Arts Studio drop
seen in Pecktal textbook.

An early stage of the drapery project-
red base sprayed and brushed omidirection-
white design applied using stencil on craft paper,
as per steps in Pecktal book.

Paints Crew- hand lettering over cartoon with fine
artist brushes -on soft goods - traveler's
drop, for Goodspeed Opera's , "Half a Sixpence".

Cutting Styrofoam with power saw,  for the
Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, "King Lear",
Jake Wood, Charge. A last minute job-the weekend-
between weeks 1 and 2 of the Goodspeed Opera
job.  Very rigorous, but glad to get my hands dirty.

This is a maquette of the "King Lear" set design.
Styrofoam was applied to wooden base, using
spray adhesive- to eventually depict hillside.
Unexpected engineering problems were
creatively handled by the Charge through the additional
layers of dense Styrofoam.

Precision drawing, tracing and cutting stencils on
toughback for hard scenery - for the repeated arch
pattern  on this hard scenery-"Half a Sixpence",
Goodspeed Opera.

Paints crew- "Half a Sixpence"-  stencils, primer, base-
yellow, blue,  black with foam brushes, 3 coats-
gold metallic, on MDF and metal hard scenery.

Glazing with extension, translucent drop  (used for a tour-
lightweight) at  Capital Scenic, for "Alice in Wonderland"
2 days paints crew- under Allie , Charge .
This was my first job and the staff was very generous  in
spite of my inexperience.

Another image from the Studio and Forum summer
workshop- masking with cornmeal, pneumatic spray
paints exercise  - under Janet Stapleman.

"Half a Sixpence" -travelers drop on a closed scrim-
some small tasks of glazing with fitches, with extensions,
at Goodspeed Opera.

Project One, Studio and Forum of Scenic Art:
Cartouche and  molding in relief.  Rosco Super Sats
and Off Broadway.

16 x 20 painting copied from postcard of  an Edward
Hopper piece for the apprentice exam, local 829,
Spring 2008.  Rosco Off Broadway Paints on canvas board.

Intricate banjo designs- four separate ,  which I traced
with electric pounce on craft paper, for "Half a
Sixpence",  Goodspeed Opera.  I thank Janet Stapleman
for having taught me how to use the electric pounce
earlier in the year.  Great saving of face.

Touch up/scenic artist - two days, "How to Succeed
...Trying", White Plains Performing Arts Center,
Vicky Davis - Designer, Aaron Montgomery - TD:
brush, roller, metallic paint faux. A very elaborate
and interesting set which alas needed a great deal of
touch up- and yet very little time to do it.

number, Children's Theatre Institute.  Oversaw 3
